Good Grief

I give up.

As a mom...there are just some battles I am not willing to fight...because I am tired. Very tired.

Awhile ago the boys came home with their school pictures. Generally, I order the smallest package possible...but for reasons I cannot explain, this year I decided to order a good size package for each of them.

When they came home with the pictures, and I looked at them, I thought to myself, "Sarah: You are an idiot" (and by idiot, I mean experienced a slight lapse in judgement ;)
I put them aside for retakes. When retake day began to near I thought I should warn the boys that they would be re-doing their school pictures. I wish I would have taped their reaction. It was pathetic. It involved writhing around on the floor and gnashing of teeth...by both of them. Ridiculous. In the heat of it, I made a rash comment (shocking, I know) I said, "Fine, I'll just hand these out to everyone we know, is THAT what you want?!?"

Again...I am an idiot.

Immediately they stood up, smiled at me and said, "Yep!"

I surrender. If I made them do the re-takes, they'd have probably been worse. So, at Thanksgiving time, I will be passing out these:

Noah - First Grade

Eli in Kindergarten...sticking his tongue through his new gap in his teeth. Good times :)

  2. I figure that school pictures are a shot of who they are at the time and then take them to the Target studio to get the nice shots that I want. My Noah's turned out pretty well this year but Aaron's didn't show his personality at all.

  3. Wow. I'm not a mom, so maybe I'm missing something here, but I think they are both *adorable.* What am I missing?

  4. They are not horrible but for sure school pics. all the way. my little girls actually turned out pretty good i was shocked!

  5. Noah's is the photographers fault! Who zooms in that much for school pictures?

My girls were okay but I get the tiny package anyway. I always think I can get a better picture of my kids than any old photographer! I just pass out 4x6 of my kids when I get a good shot. It is cheaper and my kids actually look like themselves. (Or at least the best version of themselves. :)

  6. I thought bad school pictures were a right of passage or something. :)

If it makes you feel better, I am a school teacher... which means I get to carry on the tradition of bad school pictures... Year after year... Until I am old and grey and retire.

  7. they look just fine to me and someday you will laugh over them and they will love hearing the story too! You are hilarious and I love reading your blog each day! Gotta just love those boys because they definitely keep you either on your toes or on your knees

  8. I know they aren't what you wanted, but they really aren't that bad. I do miss the boys smiles in them, but you have bunches of other pictures, as does you family, with their beautiful smiles.

  9. Noah looks so serious and Eli's teeth are priceless! All three of your boys are so cute. They look so grown up!
We won't talk about the school days with me, that's just not a good idea, but the one picture Maja endured was aweful, aweful.

  11. Ours came out the same way. We kept asking the oldest why he just wouldn't smile and he kept saying that he didn't want to. He trys to act tough. He also said that he will never go to a prom but I am betting he will change his mind on this.

  12. I am laughing so hard right now....first for your post and second for the memories you have just brought back to me. This is what I did to lighten the situation when mine were young....each year when their new pictures came out, we would all sit at the table and line up all the years pictures from 1st grade forward!!! I really should have recorded those times!

  13. I'm missing something...I think the pictures are cute.

  14. Aww, they are just fine! The one of Noah is great - so he's serious. Lots of people do that on purpose. He looks like a sweet boy. And that's so cute of Eli with his tongue. It's not like he's being obnoxious or crossing his eyes. It's cute and who he is. You'll appreciate that one of these days and wish for the cute silly stage!

  15. You are hilarious!

I especially love the tongue thru the gap in the teeth. :)

  16. Oh Sarah- they are so cute! My husband really hates picture time- almost to the point of writhing on the floor- hopefully your boys will grow out of that and once in a while you'll get a picture that really captures them!

  17. Well I feel ya Sarah!! I almost wish I could be at school on pciture day, just to make sure everything goes according to "my plans" LOL

The boys really look cute! Seeing Eli's teeth reminded me of my brother at that age, he used to spit through the gap in his front teeth!! So be glad it's just a tongue sticking outta there, and not spit flying toward the camera!!

    Thanks for sharing!!

  18. I'm totally feeling your pain. I can't stand school pictures. I get the cheapest possible package so at least they can have their class picture. I tried the zoomed in pictures this year as well and didn't like them at all. Oh well live and learn. Emma's picture this year is a classic combination of both your boy's pictures. Imagine that one for a moment and laugh with me. :) Love ya, me
P.S. Dad is still not back. :(

  19. just wait you will get them back when there girl friend comes round lol emily did the same as eli made sure everyone could see that she had lost her front 2 teeth

  20. One day (because of the story), you will LOVE those. ESPECIALLY Eli's. :) The worst become the best. :)

Our pictures this year are less than stellar. :) Sugarhead didn't even smile. No retakes for us. I didn't even know that was an option. Oh well. Too late now. It's a good thing everybody loves those (goofy) kids, huh? (yours AND mine) :)

  21. I know exactly how you feel. I have to bribe my 8y/o to wear a button up shirt with a t-shirt underneath. He can take the button up off after pics. I'd just keep the pics you have - they are cute and the stress is not worth it - to you or them:)

    ReplyDelete
  22. Oh, they are so sweet. Just think of the laughs they'll have when they're older looking back on these pictures! It will SO be worth it then! :)

  23. Your boys are to cute!

I love how old school pics always end up in wedding vidoes...make sure to put a few aside...

    ReplyDelete
  24. OK...I kinda have this "thing" about school pictures.

    I loathe them.

My kids get so upset b/c I NEVER buy their school pictures. But I really just hate spending that kind of money on pics that I dislike.

So...props to you for actually buying school pics.

Your boys are really cute. I know I have said before...but just sayin' it again!

  25. Ha, ha, ha, this made me laugh. I'm one of those small package moms too, but this time I regretted not getting more of daughter's pict. They were so cute. Your boys are adorable, despite the tongue between the gap.

  26. hmm.

this facsinates me because the photography studio will take home an ENORMOUS amount of profit from these mug shots.

(((BY THE WAY....YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE TAGGED ON MY BLOG. SORRY. IT HAPPENS....YA MIGHT AS WELL PLAY ALONG;-)

  27. when mine came back i asked my youngest what was up with his hair? he said some mom was there combing each kids hair before the picture was taken. i'd like to find out who that mom was! ;o) love the tongue pose....adorable!

  28. Your kids are so cute no matter what! Love Eli's picture - that is perfect. :)

  29. In ten years, they are going to hate those pics. If it is any consolation, we have had retakes more than once and they usually aren't any better. They aren't totally bad. They are totally boys!

  30. Do you remember that post you did a while back asking if you could sing like anyone who would it be?

    Today I got my answer.

I want to sound like her. Better late than never, right? :)

  31. Sarah, I am SO SORRY to be DYING LAUGHING at this post, at your precious boys' expense, but the way you wrote it, is just so funny! And then I scrolled down and actually Noah's isn't that bad, both eyes are open at least. And then I saw Eli, that is priceless! But I do the same thing, if you look closely at the picture of me and Heth on her facebook profile, you can see my tongue trying to poke out from behind my teeth hahaha!

    ReplyDelete
  32. You'll remember this always!! This is your boys at their best!! They really are good pics you know.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think they are really cute pictures!! Their future girlfriends or wives will love 'em!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I have also learned my lesson and always order the smallest packages. I just got La Petite Belle's picture in, which I thought about scanning and posting. I didn't realize she had a temporary tattoo on the side of her arm, where, of course, they took the picture. So, you see this half-washed-off tattoo, which I didn't realize was there. Genius. Not to mention the crazy expression she has on her face, like this photographer is an idiot.

K Belle had to do a retake this week and La Petite Belle is doing a retake in 2 weeks. I agree ... good grief.

  35. Too sweet! someday you will consider these endearing ;o)

  36. I am laughing so hard right now because of the way you wrote it and I can just see the boys getting up and going Yep about no retakes. They are boys honey and they do not care about school pictures and of course being Grandma I can say they are adorable!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. That is the cutest, funniest, sweetest thang I have seen in a long time! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  38. Very cute, showing the personality of the momment! I stopped buying them at all in Jr Hi when my youngest son totally frowned & looked like a police mug shot. I felt like a bad mom to not buy any, but c'mon!

  39. School pictures...gotta love 'em. Imagine a house of girls, if you will. I teach at my girls' school, so picture day means all 4 of us need to be pretty and polished on the same day. Ugh...this year we only had to do re-takes on one...(mine stunk, but it only goes on my id card so it doesn't matter.)

  42. THAT IS TOO FUNNY!!! I have about 3 consecutive years of the "teeth thru the gap" thing....YAY!!! (BTW they are not that bad Sarah, your kids are adorable always!) BUT i totally know what you mean--you see other kids school pics that rival those of Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron I get it I really do! :) smiles my friend!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Aw! Those are cute! I am sure they have beautiful smiles and can feel your pain. I am waiting for our retake pictures to return and pray for the best. The first ones mad eme so mad I wanted to call and ask if they let the classmates take them. I resisted. I love the teeth through the gap!

  44. they are SO adorable!!!

just think about the memories these little guys will have when they are in their 20s looking back at these pictures! One of my favorite things to do is look at old pictures ~ they bring back such wonderful memories.
