What I Failed to Mention

Blogging is the best.  Know why?  I can have a terrible awful morning and then blog about it, and ya'll tell me that you too are sometimes terrible and awful.  And *BAM*  I suddenly feel better!

OK, so there was more to it than that...your comments encouragement yesterday completely helped in shoving moving me in the right direction.  The rest of my day was MUCH better...and as you all wisely said, Eli came home completely happy.

Here's what I failed to mention yesterday.  I have been drinking decaf coffee all week (except for one little trip to Starbucks on Tuesday morning.)  Yes, you heard me right.  DECAF.  

I went from drinking 12 cups of regular coffee daily to pretty much...decaf.  This may have been part of the reason I have not been particularly sunshiny this week.

I know what you're thinking.  Why?  WHY?  

So here it is.

It's like a drug addict (and yes technically caffeine is a drug, but lets not talk about that;)  To get a fix, I needed to drink an insane amount of coffee...and still I didn't feel very peppy.  When you can drink a Venti Caramel Macchiato and then lay down and take a nap...that's probably not normal.

I've weaned myself off and today I'm feeling like I'm coming out of the haze a little...I'm pretty sure there's a term for that that I can't come up with right now...watching celebrity rehab has apparently failed me.

Anyways, I'm not breaking up with caffeine.  Just putting a little space between us so that when I do need a good "buzz"  *snickering*  then I can get one.

...and now I'm thinking of all the ways I'm gonna get "googled" from this post ;)

  1. That's funny. I gave up caffeine a few years ago...not by choice for a medical reason. My mornings are void of pick-me-ups and it's tough to adjust. Now I do get a really good "buzz" when I just injest the smallest amount of caffeine. This decaf life can eventually be used to your advantage.

    While prego I didn't drink coffee much at all but when I did - it was decaf.

    Now, I'm doing half caff.....but I only drink about 2 cups a day....

  5. Good for you! I love me some caffeine. Yeah, I would have issues going off of the stuff. Maybe, just maybe, that is a sign I should go off of it???

  7. I TOTALLY missed your post yesterday...ummmmmm...sorry.

    BUT - I wish you coulda seen me this morning before school at MY house. Yep.

    I let MY kids eat their cereal in the living room...in front of the TV. Yes, bad bad bad idea. Of course Parker dumped the entire bowl, spoon, mild and all onto the ceramic tile floor. I won't even tell you what I did or said. Bad times, Bad Times. So now I'm feeling guilty and sad...and PRAYING that he will have a good day in.spite.of.me.

    Then I had to practically smack myself upside the head...and be thankful that we have tile and not carpet on our living room floor.

    Besides, I AM THE ONE WHO ALLOWED THEM TO EAT CEREAL IN THE LIVING ROOM!!!!

    Anyway - my coffee brand - Community Coffee - actually makes what they call "half-caf." It's packaged with half caf grounds and half decaf grounds. Maybe your brand makes that too!!

  9. I am still reeling form the 12 cups daily. YOWZER.
    But the more I think about it, I new parents that drank coffee all day long. Anyhoo. Good luck on the weening, I'll say a little prayer. Sarah, you really do crack me up and I so love your humor and truth!

  10. i don't drink coffee but i love me some mt. dew! i usually drink 2 on wednesday to get me thru the long day & night with teenagers!!! ha

    i totally agree with you - love blogging & connecting with other mom's growing thru the same as me or already been there & can help me along. i'm so glad my husband encouraged me to do this.

    I just started drinking coffee this year, and I don't dare have one within 3 or so hours of going to bed because I will.not.be.able.to.sleep. :)

  15. Wow! So what kind of monstrous headache have you been having? I would have had sledgehammers in my head withdrawing from that! Ouch!

I just had to tease you and add this bit of information from the DSM-IV-TR...the essential feature of substance withdrawl is the development of a substance-specific maladaptive behavioral change, with physiological and cognitive concominants, that is due to the cessation of, or reduction in, heavy and prolonged substance use (aka the caffeine in coffee). The substance-specific syndrome causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Most individuals with withdrawl have a craving to readminister the substance to reduce the symptoms. That said...you may have loved your caffeinated coffee, but I don't think you were dependent on it. :)

    If you think you need treatment, you should seek help from someone who specialized in relapse prevention. This therapy involves helping people remove any ambivalence about stopping their drug use by examining their beliefs about the positive aspects of the drug and confronting the negative consequences of its use. Strategies are developed to deal with potentially problematic situations, as well as with the craving that arises from abstinence.

  23. that's my husbands favorite coffee from Starbucks. I, myself, am a tea drinker...English breakfast has one third the caffeine. When I met my hubby, 16 yrs ago, he drank about 15 cups of coffee a day and needed to, as you mentioned. He is now WAY down from that and will NEVER give it up. He truly loves the stuff.

  24. Ha-ha. It has been awhile and I should get couaght up.I love that you write often and short. That way it is a bit easier for me to get caught up.
    I adore the boys pictures. They are darling and typical. Atleast you are not an obsesive mother like mine was. She would COME TO SCHOOL to make sure the photographer did his/her job, and make us smile. Which, of course, looked more strained after her lecture to the photographer. lol
    Fun memories. Although, I DO think that these are cute. They both look older then their age, I noticed.
    My daughter is going to be nine, and my boys are turning five in 9 days, and turning two in one month.
    I love it, you should go read my post!!! It reminds me of one you just wrote.....

  25. 12 cups of coffee! Oh my goodness! I would be bouncing off the walls! My every once in a while one cup of coffee keeps me up at night!

    But I do get my caffeine in other forms like when I drink a whole 2 liter pepsi by myself in one day ;)

    and yay for you putting a little space between you and caffeine!

  27. 12 cups! Wow, girl. The part about drinking about a Venti Caramel Macchiato and then laying down for a nap...that cracked me up. I gave up my serious coffee addiction about 8 years ago, and I had a horrible headache for 3 days straight...that's when I realized what it was doing to me! :) I miss it though...especially with all of the delicioso holiday creamers out right now...

  28. Girl, I've been thinking the same thoughts. My doctors have more than once told me that certian conditions of mine would do better without caffinated stimulation, and I go off for a while...but relapse quickly. Lately, it's been two (LARGE) cups of coffee each morning, and about a liter of Diet Dr. Pepper in the afternoon. My body is starting to get testy... ;-)

  29. And it does work. i only have to have one to maybe two cups. When I feel it not working as much, I will take a day or two off and be coffee free. works like a charm. :)
