Littlebit Ugly

Today is the day. I'm going to share with you my own little style secret. Nail-biter moment, I know.
I came up with this little theory after wasting hours of my life investing much time looking through magazines. My favorite is the local CVS Pharmacy. The magazine aisle is directly across from the toy aisle. Genius. The kids gawk and whine about what they want, and I tune them out while flipping through magazines. It's the key to good mothering. *wink wink*

I like the pics when they catch celebs (who you KNOW have been dressed by a stylist no matter how casual they may look) with outfits that make me go hmmm, woulda never put that together, but it looks pretty good.
My style theory and these, my favorite of all dolls, have something in common. They're both cute...and a littlebit ugly all at the same time. Don't deny it, you know it's true.
On with my point: So when I was shopping with friends the other night, I grabbed a shirt and said, "I like this...it's cute...and a littlebit ugly" ...that's how I choose.

Deep isn't it.

My style tip: Something in my outfit should border on the littlebit ugly side. You know, be a little weird, a little off...

Not too weird, now. Too weird puts you into the "what the heck?!?" category...a littlebit ugly gives you your own sense of style. Makes an otherwise boring outfit look interesting.

Be creative...but not too creative...and most important of all....put on some confidence with that littlebit ugly fine fashion accessory. :)

My sweater today: *sorry about the terrible picture* Cute and a littlebit ugly. I kid you not.

Oooh, and if you currently wear anything that's a littlebit ugly and you LOVE it because it works, please please do tell!

  1. Your style theory makes perfect sense. Thanks for sharing. The sweater is a little bit retro and a little bit Mr. Rogers...cute!

My current little bit of ugly is the new bag I just bought in NYC. It's got the spotlight on the domestic fringe today. I hope it's not too much ugly.

  2. Have you been to the store Anthropologie? Love it! It's all a little wachado. Here's the link...we have one here, I'm hopping for big sales after Christmas so if you see something you like I can search it out! http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/index.jsp

  3. I, too love Anthropologie.....can't afford it very often -- but love their stuff.
And I like the sweater --- did you pair it with the new UGGs?

  5. Haha, I know what you mean! I was at JC Penney's last night, and I saw this navy blue shirt pared with a mint green halter jacket (whatever they're called...), and it was NOT something I would have pared together, but it was cute -- a littlebit ugly but awesome.

BTW, I so love your sweater.

  6. OMGosh, I think I have that cabbage patch!

I work at a funeral home, so, as my kids say, just buy her something black, she'll wear it.

So, I guess, I have no style.

  7. PS - I've got an award for you at my blog....stop by.

  8. I have never thought about it that way. I figured if it's a little bit ugly I'm not buying it and definately not wearing it. Hmm. Maybe that's my problem: I'm only going with comfort and love on my part...Oh who am I kidding, I can't do it, even a titch ugly, it's not me. That's what I say. Your sweater is cute ON you. It's not what I would but for myself. Is that what you thought when you bought it??? I think Cabbage Patch dolls are cute, ok maybe a titch ugly...but only compared to the American Girl dolls! We didn't have anything CLOSE to that growning up so yeh, Cabbage Patch dolls WERE cute to us.

  9. I can't believe you called a cabbage patch a little bit ugly. I am tramatized. Boycott coming your way...

  10. Interesting theory.....cute but a little bit ugly, never thought of that.

I wonder what Stacy and Clinton would say?

too funny, the word verification is "clint" is this thing reading my mind...spooky!

  11. Funny! I would never have thought of it like that but when you describe it is sounds like it should work. I'll have to try it out next time I go shopping for myself, which I avoid doing if at all possible!

  12. Hey, I like this theory. I think things that are a little bit ugly are totally cute! I'm kinda applying this theory to my home decorating lately. I'm really into a little bit ugly.

  13. I'm learning to push myself stylistically when it comes to fashion. I always wanted things 'just so.' But the new me has new freedoms, and I am trying to use them! Thanks for your tip! :-)

  15. good advice - did you think of this or hear it from stacey & clinton?!?! you watch "what not to wear, don't you???

  16. I am laughing out loud! Love it. My style is pretty conservative and practical but I do like to throw in a little something edgy. Now I might think of the "edgy" as a little "ugly"- yeah, questionable, not sure if you like it or not but gonna risk it anyway. Too funny.
By the way, happy birthday a little late! Sounds like you had a great day. I love that you had Starbucks twice- totally something I would do. But I probably wouldn't use the gift card which I would justify by the fact that it was my birthday and I was going to save the gift card for regular days to make them more special :)

  18. NO way. I was just saying something similar to this the other day to one of our teenage girls at church. After I finished she nodded, smiled, and said "Ya know, you're right!"
Great minds think alike, I guess. ;-)

  20. This is hilarious and I have to say I kinda like your strategy. :) And it really works for you, so keep it up! :)

Also, I instantly thought of you when I saw the pictures of this pretty white Christmas tree.

I don't know though - it yours was this fully decorates, you might get really freaked out when your son casts his reel into it and hooks himself a tree! :) Still though, it's really pretty and I wanted to share it with you b/c I don't know anyone else with a white tree. ;)

  21. I picked out a purse for Christmas...it 'might' be ugly is the way I described it to my sister. I'm hoping some people may also think it is cute. :-)

  22. I love this fashion advice! I bet Clinton & Stacey would totally agree with you too!

  23. I'm terribly in love with that sweater. It's a sweater, right? Haaaa, of course it is. And if I knew you in person I would accidentally steal it.

  24. I totally love your style! And I'm a little bit like that too, except my kinda cute ugly comes in the form of shoes. For some reason I am drawn to ugly shoes. Or at least ones that other people think are ugly!

  25. You are so cute. You aren't even a litle bit ugly. :) What a fun style tip though. And helpful for me who tends to go for too cutesy that it comes across as a little barfy. Ugly will help me. :) That hardly made any sense at all.

    Love you!

  27. "The kids gawk and whine about what they want, and I tune them out while flipping through magazines. It's the key to good mothering. *wink wink*"

I know this wasn't really the point of the post, but it cracked me up.
I do agree with you on the "littlebit ugly" as well. As long as you feel good in it, you can *probably* pull it off :)

  28. Cute and a little bit ugly . . .

Funny to think of this in relation to clothes, as this has always been the way I like my MEN ;)

  29. Following a link from Rachel at SmallNotebook. Great idea. I have started getting one thing that is "not me"...guess it's kind of along the same lines. I am very pleased with the results so far. It's opened up my eyes and I've found many things that I've learned to love because they actually look great on me.

  30. Too funny.
That just about sums up what I see when I look at myself in the mirror... cute...and a little big uggie. (I say "uggie".)
